Born in 1947, Maity studied art in Kolkata. His paintings reflect personal thought within a social perspective. Maity’s series on women is iconic and represents their collective vulnerability and exploited status. He paints his women with large and sad eyes; their dark depth accentuating a buried sorrow. His paintings are simple in appearance but contain complex undercurrents. Maity’s contemplative moods, analytical approaches, an ability to compose at will and use almost faded pastel colours, make him a master of his style.
